Pulmonary Medicine: Inpatient Care and Outpatient Testing
In support of pulmonary medicine (related to diseases of the respiratory system), Cayuga Medical Center offers pulmonary function testing for both inpatients and outpatients.
- Services include lung capacity studies, lung volumes, oximetry studies, diffusion capacity studies, arterial blood-gas testing, and methadoline
- Respiratory therapists also provide ventilator support, chest physical therapy, ultrasonic nebulizer treatments, and 24-hour support to the medical center’s Intensive-Coronary Care Unit and Level II Special Care Nursery.
Pulmonary Function Tests
Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are tests that show how well your lungs are working. The tests measure lung volume, capacity, rates of flow, and gas exchange. This information can help your healthcare provider diagnose and decide the treatment of certain lung disorders.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a medically supervised program for people with long-term (chronic) lung diseases. It may also be used before or after lung surgery. Pulmonary rehab is used for lung conditions such as:
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including emphysema and chronic bronchitis
- Interstitial lung disease, such as sarcoidosis and fibrosis
- Cystic fibrosis
