Students Explore Health Careers Through New
High School Students Health Career Explorations
New Visions: Health Career Explorations is an exciting and
challenging option for high school seniors interested in medicine and related
life sciences who want to learn all they can about health care careers.
Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga BOCES, in cooperation with Cayuga
provides an inside look at health related careers found in hospitals and
ancillary health care facilities.
The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that the demand for trained health
care professionals will exceed the supply well into the future. New Visions is a response to that significant
need, as well as an attractive alternative for those seeking an opportunity to
build a solid foundation for major decisions about further education and
A Wide Variety of Careers
Students in New Visions gain firsthand knowledge of radiology,
electrocardiography, physical and occupational therapy, nutrition, patient
information and social work aspects of health care in addition to surgery,
obstetrics and emergency room treatment. In this fast-paced program students
come to understand what is required of health care professionals, and how their
education is applied to daily, real-life situations on the job.
The students accomplish this by working and learning alongside nurses,
physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners,
pharmacists, respiratory therapists, administrative and support staff, and the
many other health care professionals who work at the medical center.
New Visions students can expect a challenging and diverse curriculum.
Progressing through rotations, they observe and can participate in direct
patient care areas. Students may apply for admission to the New Visions: Health
Career Explorations Program if they:
- Are a senior from a TST BOCES

and a desire to learn about allied health careers.

meet graduation requirements, including the completion of three years of
Regents math, science, English and social studies.
