Your Birthing Choices at Cayuga
Maternal Child Health Unit Services
Room With a View!
At Cayuga Medical
Center at Ithaca, new mothers and their families are
offered maximum flexibility and individualized care centered around
the patient's own birth plan. Very few interventions are "routine."
Rather, decisions about care are made with the patient and her family
throughout her stay as needs arise.
In almost all situations, mother and baby are cared for in the same room by
a single nurse (sometimes referred to as "mother-baby nursing" or
"couplet care"). Traditional nursery care (out of the mom's room) is
always available for any period of time, if the mother desires.
Except for cesarean section, all of our deliveries take place in a birthing
bed, in a private LDRP (labor-delivery-recovery-postpartum care) room. These
lovely rooms overlooking Cayuga Lake enable
mothers to labor, deliver, and stay with their baby in the same room until
discharge. Some mothers are moved to a postpartum room at some point after
birth for the remainder of their stay. We also welcome partners to spend the
night when private accommodations are available.
We believe new mothers and their families should have a choice about who
they would like to have visit them and when. For this reason, we encourage moms
to put a note on their door to state their wishes, announce their birth, or
request no disturbance.
Classes, and Workshops
Prenatal tours of the unit and information sessions are offered weekly to
the public. Arrangements can be made at any time to meet privately to tour or
discuss any special concerns. In addition, several workshops are offered to
prepare new families, including big brothers and big sisters, for the birth and
care of their new baby.

Center is compared annually to other
facilities in New York
State by the Regional
Perinatal Data System and the New York State Department of Health. The
percentage of breastfeeding mothers at Cayuga Medical
Center is consistently
rated among the top hospitals, and is often the highest in the state. We are
very proud of this and work hard to support breastfeeding.
The Maternal-Child Unit continues to offer VBAC (vaginal birth after
cesarean). This is an option that is no longer offered at many hospitals.
